In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.

Renowned Orange County restaurateur David Wilhelm, along with longtime partner Gregg Solomon, purchased this iconic location in the heart of charming downtown San Juan Capistrano overlooking the Jewel of the California missions. The menu features many of his signature classic comfort foods such as his Famous Buttermilk Fried Chicken, French 75's Onion Soup, and Whiskey Shrimp Dijon, featured at his Tavern House Kitchen+Bar in Newport Beach. Chef Wilhelm is a longtime South County resident, well known for the many concepts he has created over the years including Kachina, Sorrento Grille, French 75, Savannah Chophouse and Jimmy's Famous American Tavern. Tavern at the Mission has a large, tree covered, pet friendly patio with beautiful mission views. The interiors have been beautifully renovated with a chandelier lit dining room and a warm central fireplace. Our' Tumbleweed Bar' is designed as an homage to San Juan Capistrano's Equestrian and Vaqueros history.

    From the moment we stepped foot into this beautiful space we were blowen away. Everything was absolutely amazing. The drinks, food, service, atmosphere and service were top notch. The cheddar and chive biscuits were mouth watering. Light fluffy and delicious. The chowder was amazing! I could have eaten 2 bowls! The seabass was the best I have ever had. My husband enjoyed the Ribeye and the decadent bone marrow that is served with it! We topped everything off with the lemon cake that was the perfect ending to out delicious meal! We are excited to come back very soon and explore more master pieces from this kitchen!

    Dining at Opah Restaurant was wonderful. The staff was freindly, kind and knowledgeable. We felt very comfortable. The service and food were outstanding. The owner came by our table to welcome us, just as he did for all the other guests. The menu was diverse and in selections and price. The atmosphere was relaxing and joyous. I highly recommend Opah Restaurant.

    ★★★★★ Tavern at the Mission — What a Wonderful Surprise! Joy and I hadn’t visited Tavern at the Mission in years, but we stopped in for a casual early dinner and were absolutely blown away! Dave Wilhelm has created something truly special right here in San Juan Capistrano. We started with some of the best calamari we’ve ever enjoyed, accompanied by their incredibly delicious signature sauce. And the French fries? Absolutely over the top! Thin-cut, perfectly crispy, and irresistible. Their happy hour, from 4–6 p.m. in the bar, is a fantastic value. We shared a wonderful $15 Caesar salad and added freshly grilled chicken breast. To our surprise, it arrived with TWO beautifully grilled, sliced chicken breasts! Fresh, delicious, and an incredible value. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere welcoming, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Best of all, it’s practically in our backyard, and their lovely patio is perfect for bringing along our English Setter, Luca! Congratulations to Dave Wilhelm and his entire team. You’ve certainly won us over again! Joy and I will be returning often. Highly recommended! Jerry & Joy Dunton
